Dawn Smith (right) named Atlanta Legal Aid Volunteer of the Year

Dawn Smith was recognized at the Atlanta Bar Association‘s Celebrating Service Luncheon as the Atlanta Legal Aid Volunteer of the Year.

We are grateful for Dawn’s consistent support. She knows the resource limitations we face in the area of family law and consistently volunteers to take contested family law cases and serves as a pro bono Guardian ad Litem. Given the consuming nature of family law litigation (a case might well last over a year), it is often difficult to find volunteer attorneys with such dedication and expertise. We are grateful for her commitment to serving the needs of low income families.

Dawn worked in partnership with the Judges of the Fulton County Family Court to provide trained Guardian ad Litems in contested custody matters. She has trained Guardian ad Litems throughout the state and has lectured on their role nationally. Dawn is frequently appointed by Courts to serve as Guardian ad Litem in family law cases. She also is a certified arbitrator and mediates family law cases. Dawn serves on the Board of the Atlanta Bar Family Law Section. Most recently, she was on the Fulton County Family Division Task Force where her specific committee work focused on adequately serving and educating pro se litigants about their family law matters.

In addition to her expertise in family law, Dawn is recognized as one of the leading advocates for the civil and educational rights of children with disabilities
